Fight or flight?

Lees dit in het Nederlands

There are a lot of things on my mind when I think about the environment. Like how money and power is way more important than the earth we live on and from. It often overwhelms me, more than once leaving me to think it’s best to leave and go hide somewhere. If I don’t see it I won’t feel so bad. But I know this isn’t a solution. I don’t want to be an ostrich burying my head in the sand. But at the same time I don’t know what I could do to really make a difference.

Some people are out there, like Greta Thunberg, getting attention and people are listening. I’m not that kind of a person, and that’s fine by me. But I would like to touch people and get them to think about things I think are important. Now I think about it. I’m already doing this. I talk to the people around me about my motivation behind the things I do.

So let me tell you what my opinion is on the status of our environment.

I think we’re dealing with two main issues at the moment; climate change and plastic pollution. Being equally important. Often when people talk about these issues they are talking about destroying our planet. In my opinion this is a false statement. What they are actually saying when talking about our planet they are saying we are destroying humanity. As soon as we disappear plants and animals make a lot of our doings disappear also.

Earth won’t cease to exist.

It might alter by our doing, but it’s also been altering by “natural” causes like meteorites, volcanoes, tectonic activity, etc. So I see the alteration we as humanity are doing to this planet as a natural thing also, but this doesn’t mean I like it. I would do a lot if I could see a planet without human structures and demolition.

Back to climate change and plastic pollution. To make sure that all these future generations that come after us will have a life that is similar or even better than ours I think we really need to act. I don’t have much knowledge about what causes climate change, since I’m not a scientist. But I do know that I can do my best to have as little an impact as I can. Use energy wisely, shop wisely, reuse where I can, etc.

The plastic issue is slightly more clear. It’s build up out of two portions; preventing and cleaning. Many organizations, like The Ocean Cleanup, are working on (ways to) cleaning land and ocean. Now we just all need to chip in and do our part to help. But more importantly we should work on preventing of more plastics ending up in our environment. I try to buy and use as little single use plastics as I can. The stuff that I und up still buying and using, I make sure it ends up with recycling. My next step will be that every time I’m in a supermarket I’ll ask staff what they do to minimize the amount of trash shoppers take home.

Now I just need to convince the other 7.7 billion people on this planet to do the same.
